The matter of using big-data analytics in Public Security has always been a topic of interest and discussion - if not for picture of a high-tech world it paints then for the controversies regarding possible privacy concerns.
If you’ve ever watched crime-thrillers, there’s often a portrayal of scenes where escaped criminals are tracked within moments due to a centralised database, well-established surveillance grid, image-recognition systems etc.
But beyond the pages of an idealized fiction, where does the present level of technology stand in achieving this level of efficiency in real world? Or more specifically, where do we, as a country, stand in terms of this revolutionary technology. We bookmarked two Indian start-ups that caught our eye, and went through their product portfolio, in an attempt to answer this question.
Innefu Labs – Prophecy, AI Vision, Innsight, Argus
Innefu Labs: A research-oriented Information Security consulting group which specialized in meeting the Information Security needs of the consumer via specialized products and services when it began in 2010. It came into the public eye after raising a $2 Million as funding in 2018. As per growjo.com, the company raises about $15.4 Million in revenue every year with about 106 employees.
- Prophecy: A Big Data Analytics Framework: As per Innefu’s website, Prophecy “leverages ML Algorithms to develop curated solutions for entity extraction and disambiguation from all types of unstructured data of our customers.” In simpler words, the product makes it simpler to use various types of unstructured datasets from differing sources in the analysis. This includes open source data, social media data, graphic data, financial records, call data records, meta data
-AI Vision: An AI-equipped video surveillance system, AI vision has been “instrumental in monitoring some of the most critical events of National Security and has shown amazing accuracy even in a swarm if lakhs of people.” It was used in the previous Republic Day Parade by the Delhi Police to ensure public security to give real time match alert from a list of suspects. It can be used to detect intrusion and for satellite and drone image analysis.
- Argus: An investigative platform that examines structured and unstructured data regarding financial crimes – it analyses and examines the patterns in fraudulent activities from sources like bank statements, office applications and other devices. It correlates communication patterns with mails, SMSs etc to carry out EDA and finds out patterns withing the data.
Staqu Technologies – JARVIS, PAIS, SIAN:
Staqu Technologies: An AI start-up leading the security and enterprise big data analytics domains through its exclusive video analytics, big data and auditing tools that employ advanced deep learning research and cutting-edge engineering. Founded in 2015, Staqu has been in the news recently for its assistance in fighting Covid-19. As per growjo.com, the company raises about $5.4 Million in revenue every year with about 37 employees.
- JARVIS: Well, it is “Just a Rather Very Intelligent System” like its Marvel counterpart, but unfortunately the real explication of this product is “Joint AI Research For Video Instances And Streams.” Staqu’s website defines JARVIS as “A product that revolutionized the concepts of modern security.” It has an AI based customisable Video Analytics Engine with a state-of-the-art facial recognition and intelligent monitoring of objects, crowd, perimeters, and vehicles – facilitating real-time alerts utilising AI and Computer Vision. Its uses can cover areas like violence detection, number plate recognition, fire detection, identification of people and vehicles, hazard detection, Counter Theft Detection etc.
- PAIS: Police Artificial Intelligence System: As the name suggests PAIS uses AI for digital and centralized criminal records system that facilitates the process of investigation at ground zero. It incorporates features like Gang analysis, Phonetic Search, Text Search and Facial Recognition – making it an “Ultimate Data Dossier” for police investigations and apprehension of criminals. It provides instant results – with a higher accuracy than other systems of same level – and is currently being used by many police forces on ground across India.
- SIAN: Speaker Identification using AI Networks: “An ANN Model made to enrol and identify individuals uniquely through voice” – an idea that was proposed in 2018 and till now, has achieved an accuracy of 89%. Currently, SIAN is the best Voice Identification model in the world – as stated on its website.
Going over these innovations, we realize that India isn’t too far behind in its attempt to digitalize Public Security, nor are we unaware and untried in the ways of utilizing data analytics on a national scale.
At a time when AI is slowly creeping into every domain of modern day living, a smart monitoring systems like JARVIS and AI Vision or an information grid like PAIS seems like the most obvious way ahead. Moreover, Prophesy resolves the issue of managing the wide variety of data that’s constantly being created and distributed – helping law enforcement agencies in keeping organized records of various events and entities while analyzing them for patterns in real-time.
Maybe, someday in the future, the concerns regarding the possibility of privacy violations would be mitigated – even resolved – and by that time, this level of technology would be widely distributed and available, making the idea of “A safe world for everyone” into a goal and not just a dream.
